Research background
Built in the reign of the Yongzheng Emperor of Qing dynasty (1722-1735), Tainan Walled City was where the city of Tainan originated. The charm of culture formed over more than 300 years. In the Japanese Colonial Period some of the gates were demolished when new roads were built; by 1917 the city walls were almost all gone; through later rescue and rectification efforts, four gates were saved and stand to this day: Duiyue Gate, Great East Gate, Great South Gate, and Small West Gate.
Research Purpose
The purpose of this research is to propose a heritage walk in the walled city of Tainan as Heritage walks play a vital role in preserving and conserving cultural heritage. By exploring historical sites, monuments, buildings, and neighborhoods, heritage walks promote awareness and appreciation of the rich heritage of a place. It helps in safeguarding these tangible and intangible assets for future generations. It also brings communities together and fosters a sense of pride and ownership. Residents, historians, and experts often play a role in organizing and conducting heritage walks, actively involving the community in sharing their knowledge and stories. This engagement strengthens community ties and empowers individuals to contribute to the preservation and promotion of their heritage. Heritage walks have positive impacts on tourism and local economies. They attract visitors interested in exploring the cultural heritage of a place, leading to increased footfall and economic opportunities for local businesses. By showcasing the unique heritage assets of a region, heritage walks contribute to sustainable tourism and the overall development of the area.
Research Process
1. To take a case study from UNESCO declared walled cities (Ahmedabad City in India) and to understand what they have incorporated for conservation and preservation for the still standing historic structure in their development goals.
2. To find out the tourist’s footfall over the years in the places of heritage walk that is conducted in Ahmedabad Walled city as one of their development goals.
3. To find out the tourist’s footfall over the years in Tainan walled city area using already existing tourist’s spots and to compare the numbers with the case study.

Ones we have good comparison of the tourist footfall of both the Cities, respectively. We can support the proposal of heritage walk in Tainan city as a development goal to conserve and preserve the history and promote Historical tourism
